Hiking up near Flagstaff, AZ - Saturday, July 19, 2008 Flagstaff is about 2.5 hours north of Phoenix. We drove up to a ski resort (AZ Snowbowl) to do some hiking. It is comparable to the Mt. Baldy hike and starts around an elevation of 9,500 ft. Unfortunately, this is the monsoon season and there were plenty of thunderstorms--the lift was closed, and the hikes were pretty muddy. We went to a hike lower down on the mountain and also spent a couple hours at Lowell Observatory (where Pluto was discovered) just outside of Flagstaff.

Elevensies! Second breakfast was at the McDonald's on the way to Flagstaff.
Not the best place to be during a thunderstorm (so they stopped taking people up)

Would you believe it was 105 deg in Phoenix at this time?
Frisbee golf during the summer. Would be interesting to try it in the winter as well!
First time on this trail, so of course it's time for Paulquest!
Wait, this map is much better. It's in color.

And we're off to Lowell Observatory
The placard text talks about big horn sheep. Isn't that the ugliest one you've ever seen? No wonder they are endangered.

The old fire control equipment locked up in the water tower.
